Kernville: From Gold Rush Grit to Outdoor Glory

Our town of Kernville, once known as Whiskey Flat, began in 1860 during the Big Blue Gold Mine boom along the Kern River.

The name came from whiskey barrels laid across the flat near the mine, but by 1864 the growing community chose the name Kernville, after artist Edward M. Kern, to better reflect its new family-friendly character.

Today, Kernville thrives as a destination for adventure and relaxation.

Visitors come for whitewater rafting, kayaking, stand-up paddling, tubing, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, camping, antiquing, and more. Fishing is especially popular, with native trout drawing anglers of all ages. Kernville also serves as the gateway to the Trail of 100 Giants and the Giant Sequoia groves within the Giant Sequoia National Monument.
